Annual Dinner

Coming up soon is the MUMC annual dinner 2010!!

It is sure to be a fun filled weekend of classic MUMC climbing, drinking and banter, but with a twist…!

There will be suits, ties and there will be dresses!!

That’s right folks it’s time to dig out your fancy dresses (not AU stylee) and smart tux and scrub up as we will all be heading to a posh hotel for some lovely grub (4 course meal!) and later on we can rock out to the ceilidh band that will be playing for us!

The Details:

Dates are friday 5th March – sun 7th March.

This year we are heading north to good old Cumbria (the Lakes) to celebrate the clubs 82nd year. We will be staying at the Achille Ratti hut on Dunmail Raise, just above Grassmere. The meal will be at The Wordsworth hotel in Grassmere itself.

The evening is kicking off at around 7pm on the saturday night when we will be taking a coach to the hotel and wining and dining until around midnight when the coach will take us back to the hut again, no doubt lashed and singing songs about “The Store…”

The dress code is formal, and this means suits for the blokes and evening dresses / skirts for the girls. If in doubt, browse through someones facebook piccys from previous years!

The price of the weekend is £35 each, this includes the cost of the dinner, hut, coach and bus. A little more than previous trips but well worth the extra doller.

There will be the usual 3 mini busses traveling up on the friday eve and back on the sunday, and the spaces will be filled on a first come, first served basis. The only way to secure yourself a place is by EMAILING ME (JEN). Don’t try to tell me at the wall as i’m never there when u guys are, and don’t try to tell me at the pub as i will no doubt be pissed!

What i need to know on the email is who u are, an emergency contact number and if u r veggie.

Kit list:

Warm clothes

Climbing kit

(if you need to borrow club gear u need to let the lovely emily know before we go)

Walking shoes

Smart clothes and shoes and make up ect

Sleeping bag – important

Food for breakkas, lunches, snacks.

TEA BAGS

and last but by no means least… boooooooooooze!

Bring some spare cash for the bar at the hotel, a few glasses of vino will come with the meal tho. I’m sure i’ve forgotten to write something but i’m also sure u can all pack for a weekend away so no worries, i’m gonna shut up soon!

Hope u can make it, give me an email if u wanna join in the fun. Ring me if you need any more info: 07507793142

Lots of love

Ex Members list

Hello there

I am currently in the process of compiling an ex members list so that the club can keep in contact with older members.

The idea would be that you would get correspondence informing you of club events like the annual dinner, Christmas dinner and maybe some of the other weekend trips like the Pembroke trip and Funkmasters.

If you are interested in being on this list, either now or in the future (ie current members that will want to stay informed) I would be grateful if you could send an email to matthew.o.roper@googlemail.com with the following information:

Your name.
The Email address that you would like to be included in the list.
What trips you would like to be told about.
(Optional) A contact address.

All the best.

Matt

Bonfire Night!

gunpowder treason and plot…

A number of people will be watching the fireworks in Platt fields park this evening. If you’d like to join in, the aim is to meet up at about 7pm, (probably near the gates, although don’t hold me to that) then move into the field.

We will be in Jabez as normal, although perhaps a little bit delayed by the fireworks.

To join up with the group please get in touch with Maria or Mike.

cotswold Discount

Got some good news for you all!

Up to and including Monday all MUMC members will be able to get an additional 5% discount at the Cotswold shop on Deansgate.

That is a whopping 25% discount!

This is only available until Monday, 2nd November, and only at the store on Deansgate.  To get this whopping discount you will need to show your MUMC membership card and it only applies to the normal items so no sale items and no books or DVDs.

One other thing, it is meant to be one transaction per person but they will be doing this on a trust basis so please do not abuse the system or we could loose all discount permanently.

Pub Thursday night

We’ll be in Jabez Clegg tonight from around 8.30 onwards come along, have a few drinks, chat and maybe find some new climbing partners.

Jabez is on Dover St which is opposite the Union next to the NatWest

Indoor climbing on Wednesday

For those of you who came to Roaches this weekend I hope you had an awesome time despite the odd shower.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, we will be going to the indoor wall, the same as last week, and we would like all of you to join us.  If this is your first time going climbing don’t worry we will look after you.
So no one gets lost we are going to meet outside the Students Union at 1 pm and walk to the wall together which is about 15 minutes away.  It should be pretty easy to find us outside the union, just look for the club hoodies and t-shirts.  Once at the wall we will sign you in, get you into groups and hire out equipment to those who need it.  To get into the wall it will be £3 and this means you can stay as long as you want, well at least until closing at 10 pm.
All you need to bring with you is suitable clothing, normal gym wear or the like.
If you can, print off and fill out the attached form before you turn up tomorrow as it will save you time and make the wall staffs’ life a bit easier. If you did this last week you do not need to do this again.
On Thursday we will be meeting in Jabez Clegg from around 8.30 pm onwards for our usual pub night so please come along and join us.  The pub crawl last week was awesome so lets keep it up.

Pub Crawl- Thursday 1st Oct

It’s pretty self explanatory really, this Thursday we are going on a pub crawl and would like you all to get involved and make it a good night. We will be beginning at Jabez Clegg at 7pm and ending sometime much later on in Queen of Hearts in Fallowfield. There is more specific information on the MUMC noticeboard (http://www.mumc.me.uk/board/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2280) and leaflets about it will be being given out at the wall tomorrow.

See you all there, keen for the lash!

Mike

Welcome new Freshers

If you’re interested in rock climbing and mountaineering either as someone looking to try the sports out for the first time or you have experience and are looking for people to climb with during your time at university then the mountaineering club is for you. We are a large sociable club that aims to be as welcoming as possible to everyone, no matter what their climbing experience. A busy social calendar ranging from pub golf around Fallowfield to the classic 70′s themed weekend – Funkmasters, means there’s every chance to meet like minded boys and girls…
During the early part of the year we run a large number of meets out to the Peak District, North Wales and the Lake District. These are a great way to meet other people to climb with and discover the climbing areas around Manchester. Over the winter we take small groups up to Scotland to go winter climbing. Since we are part of the Athletic Union these trips are subsidised and so very cheap to go on.

The best way to sign up is at the Athletic Union Freshers fair during Freshers Week. We’ll have a stall where you can talk to us and ask any questions you may have.

The first meet of the year is to Froggatt Edge on the Sunday of Freshers Week, it’s a great day out followed by a trip to the pub for a meal and drinks. You’ll be able to sign up for this at the same time you join the club.

Have a look around the site for a bit more information; the About Us and Freshers Info pages should be particularly useful. If you have any questions then feel free to contact us.

New Website launched

So I’ve launched the new website today, it’s not 100% complete yet, but I thought it complete enough to go live with.

Currently still to do:

  • Media gallery
  • Packing up the old site into an accessible archive
  • Upgrade the forum software to allow:
    • Linking forum user accounts with the site, which in turn will allow:
      • posting of comments,
      • committee creating posts like this on front page.

So let me know if you find anything wrong with it. Still a few loose ends to tidy up, but on the whole I think its OK :)
