Den lane quarry is very near to the station. It is quick and
easy to get to. It is best to choose the lines with bolted lower
off’s because topping out on the vertical heather can be pretty
sketchy.

Wimbery is good for bouldering and routes, although the routes
can sometimes be a bit green.

The walk into Dovestones is pretty steep in comparison to some
of the nearby crags.

Standing Stones is south facing so can be a good place to go
in winter if you are a fan of the sun.

How to get there: For Den lane quarry, follow chapel
road towards Uppermill, then turn left just after the church. The
crag is on the other side of the railway.

Eastern grit. Northern limestone.

(trad, bouldering and sport)

Most of the well known Eastern grit edges are within reach of
a train station. It takes between an hour and an hour and a half
on the train then a bit of a bike or walk. Horseshoe quarry is a
sport venue, that can be a bit loose.

Bamford is sweet for anybody without a bike, train goes
straight to Bamford from Piccadilly and its about 20-30 mins walk
up a path which isn’t mentioned in the guidebook.
There’s a
small square in the town with a large stone in the centre, the
road running off that heads uphill and turns into a footpath
(cant remember the name of the path but it begins with S) which
culminates at the roadside beside the crag entrance. Awesome crag
for new climbers as well as those climbing at higher grades.
Windy as f00k too so drys quick, but also therefore, exposed to
severe weather conditions. Thanks to Borg for this
description.

Dave Morse’s local crags: “for
heroes only”
these crags should definitely have a
special weekend symbol, and 5 out of 4 stars on the adventure
scale.

Huntsman’s Leap, 5.5 hours train to Pembroke, from Piccadilly
plus 40mins on the bike. Looks a bit wet at the moment but world
class crag.
Mousetrap Zawn, 3 hours to Holyhead from Oxford road plus
30mins on bike. Adventure.
Coire Nan Lochain, 7 hours on train from Piccadilly change at
Edinburgh, plus 70mins on bike plus 60min walk in. The best crag
in Europe, only accessible from November to March.
