Freshers Info

MUMC is a large active club and information about what we do and when and where we do it can be found on this site. The front page has write ups of our latest meets and details of upcoming events. The contact page has contact details for all of the committee if you have a specific question. And the forum is great if you want to discuss your latest outing, ask a general question, rant, write gibberish.. whatever really.
Each year the club attracts people with varying amounts of climbing experience. For those of you who have never climbed before you’ll find that we help and encourage people in a friendly and supportive manner. And for those of you with some experience – no matter how much, within the club there is bound to be someone who you can climb with.

How to find us

We climb every Wednesday afternoon at the local wall at Manchester Climbing Center (MCC). For the first two Wednesdays (29th and 6th) you can meet us outside the Student Union at 1:00pm and we’ll show you the way, with a trip to the pub afterwards.  We also climb at Rockover Bouldering Centre on Monday evenings, which we will tell you about via email.

We have a regular social every Thursday in Jabez Clegg on Dover Street, opposite the Student Union, at 9 o’clock. You will usually find us relaxing on the sofas to the right of the bar. The first one is on the 7th of October. To see a map click see location.

Your First Meet
When you sign up, you’ll be invited to come on the next meet to we’re going on. This is the ideal place for you to meet existing club members and other like minded fresher’s with an interest in climbing.

What to bring
To start with, there isn’t much that you will need to bring with you. The club provides everything you will need to experience the fun of climbing, although if you happen to own any climbing equipment bringing it along would be very helpful. Unfortunately we can’t guarantee the weather so warm clothes and a waterproof are essential. It is also a good idea to wear comfortable loose fitting clothes that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. As for footwear, trainers are good. As we will be at the crag all day food is essential, unless you don’t mind going hungry. Eating other freshers probably won’t win you many friends, offering out biscuits and cakes may well do! O and beer money is always a good idea..

What to Do
Pickups for meets by coach are usually at 9:00 outside jabez clegg and outside OP at 9:15. Weekend and minibus meets leave at varying times depending on all manner of things from how much the driver had to drink the night before to someones forgotten lunch..

The Aftermath
Once the days climbing has been done, its time to take part in the second most important aspect of the club, going to the pub. After a short walk (for some strange reason we always seem to end up climbing very near to the pub!) some drinks and food are usually readily available and you can sit back and plan about your next day out climbing.
