About the MUMC
The MUMC is the Manchester University Mountaineering Club. The Rucksack Club is a Manchester based Mountaineering Club which set up the MUMC in 1927. At present the MUMC is affiliated to:
- Manchester University Athletic Union
- The British Mountaineering Council
- The Rucksack Club
We are one of the largest clubs in the Athletic Union with over 100 members. This means we have a positively huge social life as well as going away on many trips. Since we are one of the largest clubs we also get good financial support from the Athletic Union. This has enabled us to build a large store of gear for both club trips and from which members can borrow equipment. The Rucksack club itself has three well kited out huts in the South Lakes, Llanberris and Glencoe Scotland which we can use as an affiliated club.
- To introduce newcomers to the sport of climbing, providing support and instruction to novices, teaching them the basic skills that are useful and aspects of safety which are essential. Don’t worry it’s not all super hard, believe it or not (and you will when you see us) some of the committee aren’t that good at all.
- To increase the enjoyment of climbing for all members by providing a social framework for the club, i.e. you’ve got loads of mates to go climbing with!
A reputable club is without doubt the best place to learn the ropes. We are happy to take beginners, in fact the majority of our new members are inexperienced climbers. Most of the organized meets take place in the first term. Day meets are often in the Peak District, and weekends are usually in Wales, the Lake District, or Scotland. For details of upcoming trips, see the upcoming events section on the news page.
We’re all hard up students and climbing gear is expensive. So we know that you can’t afford to spend loads of money on shiny clanky new gizmos, whatdjmacallits and thingamybobs. (Especially when there’s more worthwhile things to be bought – beer for example!) This is where the club comes into its own, through many years shrewd business deals the club has acquired a vast plethora of lovely shiny stuff. Any club member is free to borrow this gear if they give a small deposit (usually in the form of a cheque) to the gear secretary. For the first few clubs trips you needn’t even do this – we’ll bring it all along! The only equipment we don’t have is climbing shoes – because you don’t need them when you first start out and also your much better off in your own shoes than someone elses funny shaped, smelly old ones. If you do decide you want your own climbing shoes then members of the club get a 20% discount at Cotswolds.
Each year we have numerous club socials, in the first semester we have a freshers pub crawl, pub golf, the Didsbury dozen, the AU and the Christmas dinner. In the second semester we have a second AU and a Annual dinner. For more information on these events see our Socials page.
Every Thursday the club meets for a few drinks and a bit of free food from 9:30 at Jabez Clegg (2 Portsmouth St) behind Natwest on Oxford Road, everyone is welcome.
